What Are Different Types of Attic Insulation?

Traditionally, homeowners have used fiberglass batts or blankets to insulate their homes. These pre-cut panels can be purchased in various R-values and sizes, with either kraft or foil vapor retarders. They’re installed in between joists in the attic, or on top of existing insulation in new construction homes.

Fiberglass batts are eco-friendly, made from recycled glass spun into fibers. However, they don’t do well with moisture and need to be kept dry, otherwise they may lose their R-value and provide less insulating value.

Another option is radiant barrier insulation, also known as reflective insulation. This consists of an aluminum film with a backing, and is installed in attics to help reduce summer heat gain. However, it’s less effective in cold climates, requires an air gap for proper function, and can be quite dusty due to the material it consists of.

Blown-in cellulose is another option. This type of insulation is created from recycled newspaper and cardboard, and mixed with boric acid to keep it fire resistant. It’s installed using a special machine called an AttiCat, and is best for attics with limited headroom. It’s also relatively expensive, but a number of utility rebates are available.
